The House

Nineteen people outside Porto, and a rule about numbers

BRUNO makes a small number of things and finishes them by hand.

That sentence is the entire strategy. Everything else — the mills we buy from, the workshops we use, the decision to publish micron counts and garment weights, the lifetime repair programme — follows from it.

We began in 2019 with six pieces and one workshop. We now make around forty pieces a year across six categories, from four mills and three workshops, none of which employs more than a hundred people. We visit all of them twice a year.

We are not trying to become large. Large would require the operations we have specifically refused: fused collars, chrome tanning, bonded belts, lined coats. Each of those makes a garment cheaper and faster and worse in its third year, which is the year we care about.
